Your three choices at lease end

These are the options Toyota Financial Services gives its lease customers. Your lease agreement sets the exact charges.

ChoiceWhat happensWhat can show up on the bill
Turn it in and get another ToyotaYou return the vehicle and lease or finance a new or Toyota Certified Used vehicle through TFS.TFS waives the disposition fee on this path when its timing rules are met. Excess wear and mileage charges can still apply.
Return it and walk awayYou turn the vehicle in at a Toyota or Lexus dealer, sign the odometer statement and settle the final invoice with TFS.The disposition fee, excess wear and use, excess mileage, and any unpaid payments, late fees, taxes or tolls.
Buy itYou get a payoff quote from your TFS online account and pay it, or finance the purchase through a Toyota dealer and TFS.The amount on your TFS payoff quote, plus the taxes and fees that come with buying a vehicle.

How a Toyota lease return works

This follows the order in the TFS lease-end guide and checklist.

  1. About 90 days out: decideCompare handing it back, buying it and trading it. A trade appraisal from us puts your Toyota's value next to the payoff number in your TFS account.
  2. Within 60 days of return: pre-inspectionTFS recommends a courtesy pre-inspection, and the condition report itemizes any estimated excess wear charges. TFS says to ask your originating dealer or any Toyota dealer whether they can do one, so call us and ask.
  3. Repair what makes senseYou can fix damage before turn-in. TFS calls a local Toyota dealer a good option for that work and says to keep every receipt. Book a service visit and ask for an estimate before any work starts.
  4. About 30 days out: set the turn-inYour originating dealer is required to take the return. TFS says most Toyota and Lexus dealers will process one they didn't originate but asks you to call ahead, so if your lease began somewhere else, call us before the drive in from Ellensburg or the Tri-Cities.
  5. Turn-in dayBring every key and remote, the owner's manual, the toolkit and spare tire, and any original equipment. The dealer completes a final inspection and has you sign the odometer disclosure statement, and you keep a copy.
  6. After the returnLet TFS know the vehicle is back through its website or app, pay the final invoice, and cancel any automatic payments you set up with TFS or your bank.

What TFS counts as excess wear

TFS measures a lot of damage against a credit card. Its lease-end guide lists these as examples that may be charged as excess wear and use:

  • One dent bigger than a credit card, poorly done earlier repairs, unrepaired collision damage, or holes in exterior panels
  • Tires with exposed cords or sidewall damage, or tires and wheels that don't meet the manufacturer's guidelines for safe operation
  • Wheel gouges, scratches, dents or cracks bigger than a credit card, and missing or damaged wheel covers
  • Windshield cracks, stars or bullseyes, and bent, broken or missing lights, signals or mirrors
  • A cut, tear, burn or stain in the seats or trim bigger than a credit card
  • Missing keys, remotes, headrests or cargo covers, broken equipment, or modifications that weren't on the vehicle when the lease began

Rock chips, gravel and the Yakima Valley

Orchard and farm roads, sanded winter highways and long runs on I-82 are hard on glass and paint. Walk around the vehicle in daylight a couple of months before your pre-inspection, look closely at the windshield, and check tire sidewalls for cuts. A chip caught early is usually a smaller decision than a crack found on turn-in day.

Mileage and the disposition fee

Your mileage allowance and per-mile charge are written into your lease agreement. Toyota's current regional lease offers, which expire November 2, 2026, list a $350 disposition fee due at lease end and charge $0.15 for each mile over the allowance. That allowance is 10,000 miles a year on every one of them except the 2027 bZ, which allows 12,000. Older leases may carry different terms, and your own contract governs.

TFS's FAQ says it isn't selling additional miles right now. If you're far over your allowance, price out buying the vehicle or trading it before you decide to return it.

The disposition fee can go away. On its Return Your Vehicle page, TFS says it waives the fee, up to $350, when you replace the vehicle with a new or Certified Toyota or Lexus financed or leased through a participating dealer and TFS or Lexus Financial Services within 30 days before or after the return, or when you've had three or more TFS or LFS accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return my Toyota lease to a different Toyota dealer?

Usually. TFS requires your originating dealer to take the return and says most other Toyota and Lexus dealers will process one too, but asks you to call first. A non-Toyota dealer isn't authorized, and you stay responsible for the lease until TFS receives the payoff and paperwork or the vehicle reaches a Toyota or Lexus dealer.

How do I buy out my Toyota lease?

Get a payoff quote from your TFS online account, then pay it or finance the purchase. TFS points you to your Toyota dealer for financing, and our finance team can help with that.

How much is the Toyota lease disposition fee?

Toyota's current regional lease offers list $350, and your lease agreement shows the amount on yours. TFS waives it if you lease or finance your next new or Certified Toyota or Lexus through TFS or LFS within 30 days either side of the return, or if you've had three or more TFS or LFS accounts.

What happens if I go over my Toyota lease miles?

You pay the per-mile charge in your contract for each mile past the allowance. TFS isn't selling extra miles right now, so if you're well over, compare buying or trading the vehicle with returning it.

Can I turn in my Toyota lease early?

Yes, but TFS says early termination fees may apply. Check your lease agreement or TFS account first, and get a trade appraisal so you can compare the numbers.

What should I bring to my lease turn-in?

All keys and remotes, the owner's manual, the toolkit and spare tire, and any original equipment that came with the vehicle.
